Create Custom Avatar Clothes Using Geometry-Aware Generative AI Texturing

New geometry-aware texture generation powered by AI lets you create avatar outfits for your app or game.

A few weeks back, we introduced Asset Designer. Available in the Developer Studio, Asset Designer lets you create new modular avatar outfit pieces using PSD templates and software like Photoshop. It's a great option for developers and content creators familiar with graphic design software, but not necessarily 3D design tools.

Today, we are releasing an update to Asset Designer that makes avatar outfit creation accessible to every developer using Ready Player Me, regardless of their 2D and 3D design skills. The new geometry-aware texturing feature allows you to create new avatar outfits using a generative AI model. This enables you to create and manage custom content for your application without ever having to leave the Developer Studio.

AI texturing in Asset Designer, paired with the existing Asset Manager tools, lets you expand the library of avatar customization options available to your users in a matter of minutes. We continue to push the boundaries of making content creation easy and more accessible, so you can create assets that truly fit the style of your app or game without putting a lot of time or money into the process.

Here's how to get started with this new tool:

  1. Go to Asset Designer in the Developer Studio (you don't have to be a registered developer to use the tool) and select the AI texture;
  2. Select an outfit piece (shirt, hoodie, pants, shoes) that you would like to use;
  3. Pick a style from 31 predefined options that best fits your requirements and click Generate. If you have something more specific in mind, you can describe it in a text prompt before. Generating textures could take up to two minutes;
  4. If you're happy with the results, click Save to add the asset to your application.

The AI-generated textures can also be downloaded as a PNG file. You can then modify them in graphic design software and upload them back using the Asset Designer.

The R&D team at Ready Player Me trained a custom generative model based on Stable Diffusion and ControlNet for assets retexturing. New assets could be easily added to the collection and get retextured. If you want to know all the details on how this works in practice, the R&D team will present AI texturing during SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 – one of the most prestigious events in computer graphics.
